Sporting events

The Moravian-Silesian Region has long supported the organization of important national and international events in its territory. Every year, national championships, European and world cups as well as international races and tournaments in various sports are held here. The organization of the European Championships and the World Cup is a testament to the attractiveness of the Region.

Sport for the Disabled

The Moravian-Silesian Region supports regional organizations such as the Society for the Support of People with Mental Disabilities, the parahockey Havířov Extraliga Club, and the activities of organizations that bring together athletes with and without disabilities, physically disabled representatives participating in the Olympics games for children and young people of the Czech Republic, European Games for disabled youth, World Championships for people with transplants, Paralympic Games and other important events. In 2019, our region hosted the most successful (according to audience numbers) the Sledge-hockey World Championship, and due to its success, another championship should be held again in 2021.

Nationwide events

Every year in our region, dozens of national sporting events for athletes of all ages and performance categories take place. These include Czech Cup races and the Championship of the Czech Republic. Finals of competitions in team sports, eg. icehockey, handball, indoor hockey (floor-ball), American football, baseball, etc., but also mass events intended for the general public (e.g. the mountain endurance race – 'Beskydy Seven', Czech Women's Run etc.)

In the last league season, clubs from our region have managed to stand on the winner's podium in icehockey, floorball, baseball, American football, handball, volleyball, swimming, karate, golf, table tennis and weightlifting.

World and European Cups

Besides these annual national events, every year the region hosts several events included in the series of European and World Cups. From these, we must at least mention the traditionally held European Cup in alpine skiing at Bílá in Beskydy, the World cup and European Cup in ski jumping on an artificial surface in Frenštát p. Radhoštěm, the World cup in Women’s Road Cycling “Gracia Orlova", the World cup in Beach Volleyball "Ostrava Beach Open" and the unique IAAF Continental Cup in Athletics, which was held at the Municipal Stadium in Ostrava in 2018. The stars of world athletics are also on show for our spectators with well known meetings every year such as the Golden Spike and the Czech Indoor Gala. The Moravian-Silesian Region is also well known as a venue for tennis team competitions including the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup. Finally, completing the range of significant events in the region, our clubs are participating in matches within European Cup club ompetitions.

European Championships

One of the most important international sporting events, which can be hosted by our region, is the European Championship. In 2019, after a few years break, the Juniors and Cadets Championship in table tennis returned to our region as well as the European championship in women’s softball. Another sport, whose European championship was welcomed to the regional capital in 2017, was rugby. The premiere for the region in figure skating was held at the beginning of 2017 when the European Championship took place and was perhaps the most prestigious event that our region has seen in the recent past. Furthermore, our region also hosted the European Championship in less traditional sports, such as 'In hip-hop' in 2016, as well as 'Electric Boogie' and Break Dance competitions in Ostrava and the European Championship in Orienteering in Jeseníky.

World Championship

The biggest sports festival, which any region can welcome, is the World Championship. In recent years, the Moravian-Silesian Region has been known primarily as a venue for the World Championship in Ice Hockey. In 2015, this event took place with record breaking attendances at this very successful championships. Ostrava should be one of the host cities of the Ice hockey World Championships again in the year 2024. In spring 2019, the most visited ever World championships in Paraolympic Sledge-hockey was held and at the turn of 2019/2020, a parade of the most talented rising stars was seen when Ostrava and Třinec played host to the Under 20’s Ice Hockey World Championships. Aside from such a popular sport as ice hockey, our region has repeatedly hosted championships in less well known sports, such as sports dancing and firefighting sports
